Technology KS3

Throughout their technology journey at KS3, Stewards pupils will learn how to respond to and solve problems, explore innovative art and design movements, and gain the skills and knowledge to creatively develop successful outcomes with a range of materials and ingredients.

The department works on a rotational basis, which means they will get the opportunity to experience all the different subjects each year. These subjects include D&T/Product design, Textiles/Fashion and Food/Hospitality.

We aim to provide a modern curriculum while ensuring to honour traditional skills and knowledge around materials and ingredients, designing and planning, and decorative surface treatments and finishes. Our ethos within the department is to model and demonstrate a successful outcome which is aesthetically pleasing, functions correctly or tastes great. Sustainability and environmental impact are always of the upmost importance to us, so we ensure to instil this in our students through projects that promote reusing materials and recycling. Our expectations of the student's standard of work are set high so we can push all cohorts to achieve high in a subject that can be thoroughly enjoyed both practically and academically.

The schemes of learning we provide will allow the pupils to explore the following techniques to create their outcomes:

  • Digital printing (CAD)
  • Fabric painting
  • Distressing, fraying and patchwork
  • Traditional woodwork
  • Varnishing
  • Melting and moulding
  • Soldering circuits
  • Architectural and interior model building
  • Laser cutting
  • Knife skills
  • A range of basic to complex cooking and preparation skills.

Towards the end of their KS3 journey, pupils will be able to select one of the following GCSE courses to further develop and enhance their knowledge and skills:

  • Fashion & Textiles
  • 3D Design
  • Hospitality & Catering
  • Construction

Technology KS4

During KS4, the Technology department works together in all the above subject areas to enable students of all abilities to achieve something they can be proud of.

The teachers within the department work across all four subject areas to deliver the AQA Art & Design specifications in textiles and 3D design, and the WJEC vocational specifications in Construction and Hospitality & Catering.

Pupils in textiles and 3D design will work on mini projects surrounding different themes, before they move on to developing key skills at a higher standard and then a larger sustained project. Projects include but are not limited to, exploring different art and design movements, controversial and political issues, environmental issues and responding to problems.

This is all worked on throughout Y10 to ensure they are ready for their externally set assignment in Y11. The coursework is worth 60% of their final grade, while the externally set assignment is worth 40%. The students will gain an insight into detailed experimentation and effective responses from extensive research and investigation around their chosen themes. They will end the course by completing a 10-hour exam where they will get the opportunity to produce a final outcome.

By the end of the course, the progression routes involved are as follows:

  • Interior design
  • Fashion design
  • Fashion marketing
  • Garment construction
  • Textile designer
  • Product design
  • Architecture
  • Landscaping
  • Textile artist
  • Sculpture design
  • And many more
