Modern Foreign Languages
The MFL department is a dynamic department within the Academy; we are passionate about the benefits that learning a language and know that it can enrich our pupils’ lives. We strongly believe in languages as a skill for life and something students should enjoy and find rewarding.
All students study one language: French or Spanish at KS3. This will be developed within the GCSE curriculum as an option choice or a compulsory GCSE depending on pathway. We aim to broaden pupils’ perception of language in the modern world and prepare them to become citizens of the world. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a variety of trips and to practise the language wherever possible.
Learning a new foreign language encourages students to be resourceful, independent and resilient when faced with a challenge. To facilitate the learning of a new language, we will support students by providing them with a vocabulary learning platform called memrise. In addition to this, students will also be supported in after school catch up sessions when necessary. The MFL department also offers one-to-one support for students to develop their speaking skills and this will be completed with our wonderful native language assistants.
