European Day of Languages and Bake Off!
Stewards Academy celebrated the European Day of languages in typical style, combining the day with a sensational Bake Off. The day started with a special assembly to celebrate the range of languages spoken by children at Stewards. Children from all year groups proudly addressed the pupils and staff in the assembly in their home languages - Russian, French, Latvian, Polish, Spanish, Romanian and Japanese to name but a few.
At lunchtime the whole school were invited to sample some of the many dozens of cakes baked by the children to represent many nations across the globe - with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Relief. A competition was also held and Headteacher Mrs Ginger chose her favourite cake in each year group. A raffle then ensued and five lucky people took home a very delicious prize that evening.
Hundreds of pounds was raised for the Macmillan Trust. Head of Modern Foreign Languages Lucia Rafferty, who organised the hugely successful day with her department, said: ‘For me, to hear one of the pupils in the assembly say that she wished she could speak in another language with such fluency and pride, only served to reinforce why I love teaching MFL. Days like today bring us all closer together, regardless of where our families originate from. The Stewards Family is as real as ever.’
Headteacher Helen Ginger later tweeted ‘I am so proud of all the charity events that take place at Stewards.’ The Macmillan Trust also tweeted their gratitude for the superb baking skills of the many pupils who took part with the support of their families.
