Next to this mural was a patch of under-utilised outdoor space and an idea evolved to develop it in to a Remembrance Garden: A quiet place for pupils and staff alike to reflect and remember.

The vision was born and the site team busied away to create a beautiful space for the Stewards community to use. As well as an array of plants and flowers to help create the special haven, there are plaques to commemorate those we have lost, and a tree planted in their honour.

As ‘Freedom Day’ approached we decided to organise a small gathering to mark the official opening of the garden. After some poignant words by Helen Ginger, Headteacher, the garden was officially opened by Councillor Clive Souter, Chair of Harlow Council. This was followed by the burial of the Stewards Academy time capsule; containing items capturing life at the current time.

The garden opening was combined with a farewell ceremony and high tea for some members of staff retiring after many years service at Stewards School, and subsequently Stewards Academy. Staff were presented with special gifts, designed and/or created by Helen Martin, Head of Art and Photography, as a thank you for their commitment and dedication to the academy.

Guests thoroughly enjoyed the delicious high tea provided by staff in our food technology department and appreciated the opportunity to sit and have a moment to reflect in the garden.

Helen Ginger, Headteacher, said: “The opening of our new Remembrance Garden marks the culmination of a year’s worth of ideas and planning. We are appreciative of the grant provided to us by Essex County Council to help see our plan come to fruition. After a tumultuous 17 months in education, locally, and indeed the world, it is important that we all have the opportunity to take time out and reflect. I would like to thank all of the staff that have brought the garden to life.”
